Anchorage Youth Symphony 2009-2010 Season Repertoire

Concert 1

NOVEMBER 17, 2009
Tuesday, 7-9:00 PM

(with Junior Youith Symphony)

Where: Discovery Theatre,
Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, Anchorage

Ludwig van Beethoven:
Overture to Coriolan, Op 62. Intense and dramatic, the Overture is Beethoven at his best, and is based on Shakespeare's tragedy Coriolanus.

Franz Liszt:
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. Based on the music from Liszt's homeland of Hungary, this music continues to delight audiences. Famously used in a series of cartoon shorts from the 1930 and 40's, the music is full of drama, verve, and delight.

Arturo Marquez:
Danzon No. 2. Written by the Mexican composer in 1994, this music is one of the most popular Latin American works to have emerged since the 1950's. This is one of a series of works written that is based on an elegant Cuban dance that migrated to Veracrus, Mexico.

Concert 2

MARCH 2, 2010
Tuesday, 7-9:00 PM
(with Junior Youith Symphony and Honor Orchestra)

Where: Discovery Theatre,
Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, Anchorage

Leonard Bernstein:
Overture to Candide. The great conductor/composer/educator Leonard Bernstein wrote a stage play in the 1950's based on Voltaire's work Candide. The overture is a bright, jazzy, and sassy work that depicts the high fun of the play.

Camille Saint-Saens:
Dance Macbre. A child prodigy, this is one of the composers earliest orchestra scores, and one of his most popular. Based on old Medieval texts, this tone poem describes Death calling forth the dead on Halloween night to dance for him.

Ingolf Dahl:
Quodlibet on Old American Folk Tunes and Dances. Written in the 1960's this work uses as its basis six tunes from fiddle music - tunes such as 'Turkey in the Straw" and "Boston Fancy". A Quodlibet is a work that combines several tunes together, usually at the same time, and most often in a light hearted and humorous way.

Georges Bizet:
L'Arlésienne Suite No. 1. Written by the composer of Carmen, this is one of Bizet's most enduring works. L'Arlésienne was music written for a play of the same name.
